On the same day that the Rays placed shortstop Wander Franco on the restricted list, authorities in Franco’s native Dominican Republic have begun an investigation into the 22-year-old’s alleged relationship with a minor.

The investigation comes after various social media reports on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter, claimed that Franco had been involved in an inappropriate relationship with a minor. The league began its own investigation into the posts on Sunday evening.

Franco did not play in Tampa Bay’s game against the Guardians on Sunday and will be out for at least six games while on the restricted list, though that absence could be longer. He will be paid during his absence.

“We support any steps taken by the league to better understand the situation,” the Rays said in a statement Monday regarding MLB’s investigation. “Out of respect for all parties involved, we have no further comments at this time.”
